Washington DC day 2

Beginning with a hearty breakfast we headed out on a walking tour of the sights around Washington. Most of the places we wanted to go were situated in close proximity so a walking tour seemed to be the best solution.

We started our walk down the length of Pennsylvania Avenue, arriving at The White House. It was a little smaller than I’d expected but that (like the Lincoln Memorial the previous day) was due to the awesome size of every other building around it. The American Treasury building next door dwarfed The Whitehouse considerably. I’d have loved to have gone inside but I’m reliably informed that these days you have to be invited or hold American citizenship to go for the limited tours inside.

Our next stop was FBI building, this was a regular fortress. I heard a passing segway tour guide telling her gang that after 9/11 all the 1st floor windows were bricked up!

At the far end of the long grassy area from the tall pointed monument, passed all the Smithsonian buildings is The Capitol. This is reminiscent of St Paul’s Cathedral with it’s domed roof, which was undergoing restoration works and was covered in scaffolding.

Ensuring we had seen the major buildings featured in National Treasure, we next headed for The Library of Congress. Boy we had a shock. The interior resembles but isn’t really like the one you see in National Treasure! They must have built a set based upon the original but then altered it to better fit the plot lines.

We continued our walking tour with a jaunt up from 1st to 12th Street to eat at our second Man v Food establishment Horace and Dickie’s. They do serve a really tasty fish sandwich. I have to agree with the TV show, it was that good. Even Luke (Mr Fussy Drawers) ate a good amount of the tasty fish sandwich.

We trundled our way back to Smithsonian space and air musem passed a “Family Dollar”, which was kind of like an American B&M discount store. We bought two drinks each and an ice cream before heading back towards the museum. We saw the Kitty Hawk, Amelia Earhart’s plane and lots of other things including a Spitfire which Matty was fascinated by. Again the interior wasn’t exactly the same as the one portrayed in Night at the museum 2.

Since we’d shared one large fish sandwich for lunch I suggested we went by Metro to the Golden Corral for our evening meal. This is a large buffet outlet, serving 150 different buffet (serve your own) items. Everyone loved it and ate way too much. This again was somewhere we only found out about right at the end of our time in Florida. After our CiCi’s pizza buffet we walked along the little parade of shops and looked through the windows of a Golden Corral.
