exploring Naples

Today we explored Naples and took a mega step challenge, climbing a staggering 500 steps up 50 flights of cobbled steps to ascend to the top of one of the biggest hills surrounding the city. Half way up we were glad of a drink stop at a small supermarket. But unfortunately our thirst returned with the sun blazing on our backs as we climbed. The view over the city was pretty good but a little obscured by two apartment blocks.

After we’d visited an unimpressive market we walked back down to one of the main shopping streets for a cappuccino break (char) where Liz had one of the biggest Palmier biscuits you’ve ever seen. From here we hurried to the Cathedral before it closed for lunchtime prayers. The interior decor was very ornate with painted ceilings.

Lunch was a margarita pizza to share, and a quick rest before we hopped on the railway and headed to the royal palace. It wouldn’t be a surprise that there was a ton of tapestries and paintings stretching through time from 1500 to 1940. We weren’t able to see quite all of the rooms open to the public due to renovation and a literary event occupying some of the rooms.

our next conquest was the football stadium which Liz deemed to be a tad run down and neglected. It certainly wasn’t up to the standard of many of the premiership stadiums. My summary in one word would be, scruffy. We popped into a rather grand shopping centre with a huge domed room. Kind of reminded us of The Marlowes in Hemel (not).

To avoid the temptation of yet more pizza or pasta, we had tea in the roadhouse, an American style grill bar. Walking back to the hotel for evening coffee rounded off our step count which topped off at 29,471. Not bad for a days holiday!
