Procida

As you look at a map of Naples, the island of Procida is many miles to the left just above it’s larger brother Isola d’Ischia. It’s a tiny island, less than 2 miles square and covered with a network of narrow roads and cobbled streets. The roads are so narrow they have special tiny busses which are both shorter in length and less width than our English busses, and most deliveries are made with either a Daihatsu pickup van or a Tuk tuk van!

We had to be at the port to catch our ferry by 8:40am and took a fast ferry which covered the distance in 40minutes rather than the hour the slow ferry takes due to it also being the car ferry.

(The ferry)

The island is very picturesque with lots of coloured buildings and beautiful scenery, so there was a ton of things to see. But we walked everywhere in what turned out to be a really warm day. By the time we’d completed out 20 km (12.5 miles) walk in 25c we were ready to return to the mainland. But don’t worry too much Reader, we punctuated the distance covered with cappuccino pit stops so it wasn’t all bad especially as we took some lovely pics enroute.

Momentarily it did get a little silly just after lunch when the female members of the party were sipping two glasses of Peroni to wash down their toasted sandwich (and yes you guessed right, that was two glasses each). I made do with a Lemoncello spritz which was quite refreshing. The toasted sandwiches were absolutely delicious and were complemented by the wonderful view over the marina.

We decided to get a slightly earlier ferry back to Naples and managed to get the slow ferry which meant we could sit in the open air, rather than inside a stuffy cabin. This also gave us the chance to take some pics of the island and of the mainland from the ferry.

(Vesuvius from the sea)

After the cool sea breeze, the city seemed so hot and stuffy and we didn’t wear our long sleeves which we had done on previous evenings. Not wanting any more pizza we found a pasta place, which are way harder to do as so many places sell pizza. Our task was made harder by the need to filter anywhere that specialised in seafood pasta. Finally we found somewhere with a great menu but they were fully booked which was a shame. But we managed to pull victory from the jaws of defeat when the head waiter suggested we walk up the road to their sister site which served the same choice of food. It was definitely worth the walk and we left stuffed to the gills.

Overall it’s been lots of fun and we all agreed it’s a shame it has to end tomorrow.
